Ammonia calibration gas is used to conduct bump testing and calibration on ammonia gas detectors and sensors. Regular testing and ammonia calibration are critical for ensuing the accuracy of gas detector readings and preventing respiratory issues and other health hazards resulting from exposure to high levels of ammonia gas.

Maintain Your Ammonia Gas Detectors Using Bump Testing

Bump testing is used to test the sensor and alarm of an ammonia gas detector. The test involves exposing the sensor to a concentration of ammonia calibration gas that is slightly higher than the lowest alarm setpoint. If an alarm is triggered, you know the ammonia gas detector is functioning properly. When the gas detector does not respond or register a reading after a few minutes of gas exposure, it means it needs to be calibrated.

All information from the test should be recorded for monitoring inconsistences and to ensure your detectors and sensors are being tested regularly. In general, bump testing should be conducted monthly, though more frequent testing may be required for handheld ammonia gas sensors or if your detectors are exposed to heat, humidity or high concentrations of ammonia gas.

Ensure Accuracy and Reliability by Performing Regular Ammonia Calibration

Calibration is used to measure the accuracy of ammonia gas detectors and sensors. To perform calibration, the sensor is exposed to an ammonia calibration gas for an extended period.  The ammonia detector’s response to gas exposure is then measured to see whether it is providing accurate readings based on the concentration of ammonia calibration gas. For accuracy, ammonia detectors should always be tested and calibrated in conditions that mimic their operating environment.

It is recommended that ammonia calibration is conducted at least every six months as part of your gas detector maintenance plan. For handheld ammonia gas detectors, it is recommended that ammonia calibration is conducted prior to each use. As stated above, more frequent calibration will also be required if your gas detector fails a bump test. By conducting regular ammonia calibration, you will not only ensure accurate readings but help extend the life of your gas detection system.

Since the accuracy of an ammonia gas sensor will naturally diminish over time, it is important to conduct regular tests and calibration, and replace gas detectors as necessary.
