Ethane (C₂H₆) is a colorless, odorless gas that is a by-product of petroleum refining. It is a component of natural gas and used in the production of ethylene, anti-freeze, plastics, and detergents. Ethane gas is flammable at room temperature and becomes highly explosive when mixed with air. Liquid ethane vapors are heavier than air and displace oxygen, creating an asphyxiation hazard at higher concentrations.
